COOKING WITH FAMILY IS ALWAYS FUN

by Manya Sharma

When you are a part of a family where you have two elder sisters and caring parents, you don’t get to work much in the house. Generally, most of the chores are taken care of by either your mother or by the older siblings. A girl like me who never took interest in going to the kitchen never learnt how to work in it, my rare trips to the kitchen were constricted to making tea or boiling water, tried and made delicious dishes. This all was possible because of my loving family.

Before this lockdown whenever I used to go to the kitchen, I always made a mess. In my mother’s words, “tumse na ho payega“. And on this my father, making sure that he always has my back, used to reply, “bacchi hai, seekh jayegi“.

So, this lockdown gave me an immeasurable time to improve my cooking skills, which actually proved to be very fun, doing it with my family. The experience, when your father is helping you in the kitchen and your mother outside waiting for food, is very amazing. And all this while your siblings keep irritating and bothering you.

It was a good experience to cook and spend quality time with my family. It helped us lighten our moods and kept us positive during this pandemic. Together we created a lot of good memories and moments inside and outside the kitchen. From taste checking to washing the dishes and cleaning the house all these lifelong memories will always remind us of the good times we had and gave us something to remember this pandemic with a smile. I fabricated memories like baking a cake for the very first time with the help of my sister. It is really fun when your brother teaches you to make round rotis.

We tried a lot of different and delicious dishes at home like chole bhature, samose, dal pakwan, different kind of chaats, many desserts like ice-cream, cakes, special Rajasthani dishes like balushahi, ghewar, daal baati choorma, etc. All these dishes are a delicacy when you sit together with your family and enjoy them chatting and teasing each other around the table. It spreads positivity and a happy and healthy vibe in the house and also amongst the family members.

This lockdown gave all of us ample time to spend with our loved ones without being bothered by the fact that we have to return back once the vacation is over. I got to learn many things during this period like I can make perfect round rotis now 😜. I improved my limited culinary skills. But most important of all I understood the importance of family in my life. It was an experience I will cherish forever.

Spending time with loved ones trying something new together is always joyful. So try to spend some quality time with your family. Do your favourite stuff together, cook together, eat together, help each other and most important thing love each other. Enjoy this time and make the best out of it, so, whenever you look back at this time of global pandemic you have memories that remind you how happy and beautiful even a pandemic could be.
